Course Description

MIA with the generous support of marine insurer Club Marine is introducing the Club Marine Extreme Weather Preparedness Course for marinas in 2018.
2017 has seen a horrific Central American hurricane season, which followed on from similar events across our region.
These storms are not always predictable, and the destruction can be immense.
Creating a comprehensive Extreme Weather Preparedness Plan can significantly reduce the time and mental strain spent preparing a marina operation in advance of
severe weather.Itcan help save lives and minimise property damage.
MIA has created a course for the marina industry to check and if need be update marina planning, procedures, and facilities to ensure staff and customers are prepared for extreme weather events.

Course Content

This half day course will discuss and analyse issues including the following:
•Recent case studies and how to learn from these events
•Evaluating your marina for extreme weather – structural aspects of and damage potential to floating boat docks and piers: piling size and type, type of docks and direction of slips, wood or concrete, cleat sizes and strength, berth layout, seawall protection, etc.
•Extreme weather management
•Developing an extreme weather management plan
•How an extreme weather preparation plan can be implemented
•Legal and Insurance implications
The final 30 minutes of the course is spent discussing the application of the above issues for that marina as an example.

•Ensuring the marina facility is prepared for extreme weather according to best practises
•Networking with other marinas in the area to share ideas and knowledge on extreme weather preparedness
•Identifying any common issues with other local marinas and develop improvement strategies

Who should attend

Key stakeholders drafting and implementing marina facility’s extreme weather management plans such as marina owners, marina managers, club manager and dockmasters should attend this course.
