We are delighted to share the news that the Clipper Round the World Yacht race will return once again to our home at Abell Point. When the marina successfully won the bid to host the 2015-2016 rest leg, Lure was a venue in its infancy and not yet open to the public. We hosted several events over the 5 days the crew were in region from informal cocktail events, to presentation nights which showcased the versatility our venue and the welcoming atmosphere of the Whitsunday community.
Fast forward 2 years and in January 2018, the Whitsundays will once again play host to this epic yacht race and the brave and resilient crew members who participate. This time Abell Point has been named as Home Port Sponsor, which means the fleet stays longer and the celebrations get bigger!
The Whitsunday Clipper Race Carnival will take place over 16 days with some spectacular events taking place, showcasing the very best in our region. From a long lunch on Whitehaven Beach to a rodeo on the foreshore in Bowen, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Lure once again will play media room for the Clipper crew, as well as providing the venue for the race prize-giving for those participants who complete their race leg in the Whitsundays. With over 350 people packed into the venue to celebrate in 2016, we are planning an event to match that.
The community will be involved in many of the events, with open days on the boats at the marina taking place to visitors can see how the crew manage life at sea in those conditions. We are also planning community markets, pop up brekkie bars and live entertainment to keep the atmosphere alive, so watch this space for more updates on the specific event calendar as they are released.
